Living in Colorado, I’ve seen my fair share of Ice Sculptures and Snow Castles, but never in my life have I seen something to this degree. Can you imagine going to a hotel and having this block of ice as your room? You better believe it because there is actually a hotel in Sweden made entirely of ice and snow. (I know Rebecca will probably book her room the minute she sees this because we all know how much she loves the cold climate!)
The Ice Hotel is located in the village Jukkasjärvi, Sweden just north of the Arctic Circle. Every Winter the hotel has to be reconstructed due to the damage from the Summer months. However, this is no problem with the people creating this master piece each year. Each November when the snow starts rolling in, a group of snow builders, architects, designers, and artists from all over the world come together to start building.
In order to create this mass, snow is blown on huge steel structures to form the long corridors. Once the steel is removed and the dividing walls are up, is when it’s the artists’ “time to shine.” Ice Blocks are borrowed from the Torne River and the designing begins. A new section opens every month of December and come January 5th, construction is complete. Check out the website below to see more images and perhaps it will lead you to book your travel to see it for yourself.
